The Historic Hamlet of Ancram
Land Acknowledgement
Located on lands once inhabited by the Munsee Lenape and Mohican peoples, Ancram Opera House overlooks the Roeliff Jansen Kill, originally called the Sankhenak (flintstone creek) or Sonkippog (cooling water). The Sankhenak served as a natural boundary between the Mohican and the Wappinger tribes which may have prompted the different geographical names. We are privileged to work and reside in this beautiful region, and honor the legacy of those who precede us.
The Ancram Opera House Building
The Ancram Opera House was erected in 1927 as Ancram Grange #955, a chapter of the National Grange of the Patrons of Husbandry, to address the social, educational and economic concerns of the region’s farmers. In 1972, the building was repurposed and renamed the Ancram Opera House as an arts venue focusing on light operatic fare. Over the years, a variety of performances, film showings, vaudeville acts, lectures and social gatherings have taken place here. In 2016, under new leadership, Ancram Opera House rededicated itself to aspects of its origins: to produce and present inventive contemporary theatrical performances to be shared by a rural community.
